Back in 1960 or thereabouts the Yorkshire Film Company, where I was employed as a Director/cameraman, made a film for Calmic- the firm that makes those air freheners that fit on toilet tanks to make them, well,, fresher. We needed some bad examples of toilets and the worst one we found was---- in Greenhead Park. The entrance was along a five metre curved cutting in an embankment, brick-lined and damp, with ferns growing out of the gaps between the bricks. It was a lovely tracking shot, enhanced by suitable horror music. You ended up at a sort of mini-ampitheatre. Both the ampitheatre and entrance were open to the atmosphere, just as well. Facing you then were several er- toilets, lavatories, bogs, all trashed and with no doors. There was no water and nowhere to wash, but that obviously didn't worry those brave anough to use the 'facitlites'. I never used them- just filmed them (And their location was never mentioned!)

i have two old postcards of Greenhead park stamp dated 9.15April 14th 1908, they show the original lake which is now being constructed back to how, i now can see by these postcards, just how it used to be then. one shows the arched shelter and lake, and the other one shows the lake going around the bandstand which is full of people. i have had these for years, i spent my childhood there in the holidays i am now 60 years old , the highlight of the year was the end of the summer entertainment when we were taken to the conservatory which was full of all exotic plants and if i remember right banana plants too, then to the paddling pond, it was always packed with children, it shut at a certain time then the pond was taken over by people with engine powered model boats, we would watch them before making our way to the top of the park where we had a ride on the little railway train that just went down one rail, then you went back up the track backwards, then to the outdoor theatre where children of all ages was allowed to sing, dance or show any talant they had, followed by the firework display as soon as it got dark
